School Closure: March 16 – April 3
Dear CUSD Families,
On a daily basis, we have been working with the Health Department, County Office of Education and Santa Clara County Superintendents to remain in alignment with actions and responses in support of students, staff, and community.
Based on information from the Santa Clara County Health Department and the Santa Clara County Office of Education today, starting Monday, March 16, 2020, the Cupertino Union School District will be closed to students temporarily. Based on today’s announcement from the County Public Health Department ordering a ban on gatherings larger than 35 people, which means we cannot effectively operate our schools. Based on this order, schools will be closed through April 3, 2020. In addition, we are working with FUHSD and Sunnyvale School District to shift Spring Break to the week of April 6-10, 2020.
On Monday, only District Management staff will be on campuses planning for staff professional development related to flexible learning. On Tuesday and Wednesday, all staff will be asked to report to work, at which time they will work with their supervisors to engage in department planning related to the scope of work and service to the teaching, learning, health, and well-being of staff and students.
Families will receive information by Thursday, March 19, 2020, about our plan to support student learning over this time period
In the meantime, feel free to pull ideas and resources to support student learning at home until you hear more from us on Thursday. Our website has a variety of resources available for families, in addition to family and community resources to help support students with stress and anxiety around this type of issue. Free Parent Education Talk on Wed., Feb. 12, 2020
Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death of children ages 10-14? Did you know that one in five California high schoolers have considered suicide? Did you notice the suicide hotline phone number on the back of your student’s ID card?
Youth death by suicide happens in our area. It’s not only the overly sad, depressed students who contemplate suicide. Students who are bullied, who feel that they can’t please their parents, or who struggle in class may contemplate suicide. Students who are high-achieving academics or top-tier athletes also consider it.

New bus route to CMS
VTA has started a new bus route between the Grant Park and the Highlands/Woodland Acres neighborhoods to and from CMS and HHS. The route is 51H. It runs southbound three times in the morning and three times northbound in the afternoon.
Unfortunately, the times shown on the VTA site do not appear to be correct. The times on an app called Transit seem to be the correct times.
Please see the attachments below for more info.

Stress and Anxiety in Tweens and Teens
Wednesday, January 29, 2020 from 6:30-8:00pm in the CMS Library
Anxiety is the most common emotional problem in children. Students can experience test anxiety and social anxiety, as well as other types. Anxiety can present itself as nervousness, but can also include things such as a stomach ache, inattentiveness, aggression, or disruptive behavior.
Join us as Dr. Mark Reinecke, Clinical Director of the Child Mind Institute, San Mateo, speaks about stress and anxiety in tweens and teens. He will discuss symptoms of such concerns and present some helpful tips about how you can identify and help your child manage their stress and anxiety.
